Summer Solstice

Today, June 20th is the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. The term solstice comes from the Latin word solstium, meaning “sun stands still.” On this day, the sun appears to stand still as it reaches its highest point in the sky. This illusion occurs because the earth is tilted as far as it can go towards the sun.  The solstice signifies the official start of summer and has been celebrated for its symbolic importance since ancient times.

In England, people travel to Stonehenge to observe the sun rising over the stones. Sweden ties the occasion to a celebration of midsummer. In New York City, the occasion is celebrated with a day-long yoga event in the middle of Times Square! And in Williston, Vermont, Bikram Yoga celebrates the day with a Solstice Yoga Class honoring the fertility of earth and the sun’s blessing of warmth and light.  Whether you watch the sunrise, feast, drink, or do yoga, make sure to enjoy the day!
